- Apr 2015 – Initial concept work begins on a forced-reset fire control system, evolving beyond bump-fire and binary-style triggers.
- Sept 2016 – Jeffrey Cooper Rounds files a patent application on a cam-driven forced-reset trigger design that becomes the core ’223 patent family.
- Dec 2017 – Early prototypes are demonstrated privately; internal disputes start over cam geometry, reset force, and spring tuning.
- Feb 2018 – The primary Rounds patent application is published, and continuation work begins to lock in variations of the forced-reset mechanism.
- Mar 2019 – Additional filings cover refinements to cam-driven reset systems and selector-controlled forced reset — groundwork for later enforcement.
- Jan 2020 – Rare Breed Triggers founded; begins R&D on the FRT-15 based on the Rounds (’223) patent work.
- Mar 2021 – FRT-15 released → ATF sends “cease and desist” letters, calling the trigger a machine-gun conversion device.
